Missionary Position: Comfort, Support and Variations

Calling missionary boring is a bit like calling toast boring. It tells us very little about the toast and rather a lot about the person making the announcement.

Familiar positions have advantages. You recognise the setup. You can usually see each other's faces. You aren't halfway through something intimate when you discover your hamstrings have declined the invitation.

What makes a position feel good is more personal than its reputation.

Missionary broadly describes a face-to-face arrangement with one person reclining and the other above. Bodies, mobility and preferences change how that actually looks. You don't need perfectly matching heights or a prescribed leg position.

Start with support. The person above needs to carry their weight comfortably without pressing uncomfortably on their partner. The person below should be able to adjust, breathe freely and say when something needs to change.

If holding the position becomes hard work, change it. A supported alternative or a break beats quietly developing a grudge against your wrists.

A different pillow height, a little more space or a change in how the upper body is supported can make the arrangement feel different. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether it helped.

Putting a pillow under the hips changes the angle. It doesn't automatically improve comfort or pleasure, and higher isn't a prize. If the new angle feels too deep, strained or simply less enjoyable, take the pillow away.

Your bed is not a showroom. Accessories are allowed to fail the audition.

Penetration alone isn't everyone's preferred route to orgasm. If clitoral stimulation matters to you, say so and make space for it rather than hoping a particular position will solve the question silently.

A hand or an external toy may be part of that conversation. Choose something the person using it can position comfortably. Our couples' toy guide is a useful next read, and the clitoral stimulator collection shows several formats to compare.

There is no obligation to add a toy, either. Another object is only helpful if you want it there.

Face-to-face positions can feel intimate. They can also make someone suddenly aware of their own facial expression. You don't need to maintain a meaningful gaze like you're in the closing scene of a film.

Look at each other, close your eyes, talk or laugh. A relaxed "Could you move a little?" can do more for the mood than silently enduring an angle you dislike.

If anything hurts, stop. If you both enjoy the familiar version, keep it. Novelty is available whenever you want it; it doesn't have to attend every evening.

Missionary has survived an awful lot of criticism for something people keep choosing. Perhaps the old favourite knows a thing or two.
