Period Sex: Comfort, Cleanup and Common Questions
Share
Period sex can inspire surprisingly dramatic opinions for something that may mainly require a conversation and a washable towel. Some people enjoy it. Some do not. Neither preference needs a campaign, a defence speech or a specially designed personality.
The starting point is whether everyone involved wants to, feels comfortable and understands that menstruation does not switch off the usual safer-sex considerations.
Ask what feels appealing today
Interest and comfort can change across a period. Someone may feel affectionate but not want genital contact, or enjoy intimacy on one day and prefer a hot-water bottle on another.
Do not assume a previous yes applies today. Ask without making reluctance seem prudish or enthusiasm seem unusual. "What would feel nice?" leaves more room than announcing that you personally have no problem with blood.
There is no obligation to have penetrative sex. Our non-penetrative position guide offers other ways to be close if those suit you better.
Protection still matters
Planned Parenthood explains that sex during a period can still lead to pregnancy and does not prevent STI transmission. Use contraception and barriers appropriate to the activity and your circumstances.
Menstrual blood is not a substitute for personal lubricant. If friction is uncomfortable, pause and consider a compatible lubricant. Do not continue through pain because you assumed this particular week would handle lubrication for you.
If you have new or unusual bleeding, significant pain or symptoms that worry you, seek medical advice rather than automatically attributing everything to your period.
Check menstrual products first
Remove a tampon before vaginal penetration. A tampon is not meant to share that space with a penis or an insertable toy, and pushing it further in does not improve the arrangement.
Other menstrual products have their own instructions. Do not assume a cup or disc can remain in place for every kind of sex. Check the specific product, remember it is not contraception and never force an uncomfortable setup.
If a menstrual product becomes stuck and you cannot remove it, get medical help. There is no need to turn the bathroom into a personal retrieval workshop.
Make the cleanup ordinary
A dark, washable towel can be enough. A waterproof blanket may be useful if you already want one, but a period does not create an urgent shopping requirement.
Keep clean-up supplies nearby, wash toys according to their instructions and use gentle external hygiene. Internal douching is not needed to make the vagina acceptable afterwards.
If there is a stain, deal with the fabric rather than making anyone feel embarrassed. Bedding occasionally meets a body fluid. It chose a demanding industry.
You can also decide to wait. The most useful approach is one that makes both people comfortable, including the person who would currently rather wear enormous pants and watch television. That is a valid evening too.
