What Is Frotting? Gay Sex Beyond Top and Bottom
Share
“Top or bottom?” is a common enough question. It can also be a rather narrow one when you've barely finished saying hello and already somebody wants your entire evening sorted into two options.
Frotting usually means consensual penis-to-penis rubbing. It's a kind of non-penetrative sex often discussed in gay and bisexual men's communities. The appeal can be direct genital contact, closeness and enjoying each other without making anal penetration the next compulsory step.
In other words, there are more things two people with penises can enjoy than the internet's favourite multiple-choice question allows.
Frotting is a specific kind of body contact
You'll also see “frot” and “frottage”. People use those words with some overlap, although frottage can mean body rubbing more broadly. Here, we're talking specifically about partners choosing penis-to-penis contact.
The words don't tell you someone's gender, identity or complete sexual preferences. They describe an activity. You can be curious about it without announcing a new permanent category for yourself.
And it is consensual contact we're discussing. Rubbing against someone who hasn't agreed is not what this guide is about.
It doesn't have to lead to anal sex
Frotting can be part of a longer encounter, or it can be the sex you both wanted. It doesn't need to be filed under “things we did before the real bit”.
That distinction matters if you enjoy men but don't fancy anal penetration, or simply don't fancy it tonight. You can still be interested, confident and thoroughly sexual. You haven't arrived with half an appetite.
Our non-penetrative sex guide explores other options too. A preference for one activity doesn't automatically rule out every other one, and it doesn't require a defence speech.
Closeness can be the whole appeal
For some people, the interest is being close enough to kiss, touch and notice each other easily. For others, it's the particular contact. You don't have to dress either answer up in something more complicated.
Think about the difference between choosing an activity because you enjoy it and treating it as a waiting room for something else. Giving the activity your attention changes the mood, even before anything physical changes.
If you're both enjoying yourselves, you can stay with what you're doing. The evening hasn't fallen behind schedule because nobody has announced a change of position.
Comfort matters more than copying a pose
Find a position where neither of you is supporting an awkward amount of weight or twisting to reach. Body shapes and heights vary. A photo cannot tell you where your knee will start complaining.
Skin-to-skin rubbing can become uncomfortable if there's too much dry friction. Suitable lube can help, and you can add more if needed. Our water-based versus silicone lube guide covers the practical differences.
If anything starts feeling sore or irritated, stop and change what you're doing. The answer to chafing is not a stronger work ethic.
No penetration doesn't mean no STI risk
Some STIs can spread through genital skin contact. Barriers can reduce risk but don't cover all the skin that might touch, so testing and a straightforward sexual-health conversation still matter.
Keep that distinction clear without turning the whole encounter into a medical interview. If you need personalised advice, a sexual-health clinic can help you understand the activities you're actually having, rather than assuming every gay man has the same sex life.
Say what you fancy doing
“I'm into rubbing together” is easier to understand than hoping your partner uses every slang word exactly as you do. It also leaves them room to say what they like.
You might find the same preference, a different one or a few things you'd both enjoy. Our guide to mutual masturbation is another option if shared pleasure without penetration sounds like your kind of night.
There is no need to squeeze yourself into a sex act you don't want just to make somebody else's categories tidy. Tell them what you're into. That's a much more interesting answer than ticking a box and hoping for the fucking best.
