Textured or Smooth Dildos? Find Your Favourite Feel

You're shopping for a dildo and suddenly have strong opinions about veins. Fair enough. If something is going in your bedside drawer, you're allowed to be fussy about the feel.

A smooth dildo has an even surface. A textured one adds ribs, bumps or realistic veins. Those extras can change the sensation, but more texture doesn't automatically mean better sex. Pick the surface you want against your body, not the one that looks busiest in the photo.

Smooth dildos can still feel bloody good

You open the drawer, look past the fancy toy you bought last month and reach for the same smooth dildo again. You know the curve, you like the pressure and it does what you want. That's a favourite, not a failure to be adventurous.

With a smooth surface, you feel the toy's overall shape without ribs or bumps adding extra contact. A curved toy, a wider shaft or a firmer material can still feel quite different. Smooth only tells you about the outside.

Maybe you like keeping things simple. Maybe you like a toy that looks nothing like a cock. Both are good reasons to buy one. Your dildo doesn't need a bloody backstory about how much more experienced you've become.

Ribs and veins add something else to feel

Then there's a ribbed dildo you keep looking at. You aren't imagining a bigger toy. You just want a bit more going on along the surface.

Lightly raised veins are different from deep ribs or chunky bumps. A defined head adds shape at the tip; ribs run along the shaft. Think about where the texture sits as well as how much of it there is.

A realistic-looking dildo doesn't have to feel heavily textured, either. Some details are subtle. Others leave very little doubt about what you bought. A photo full of veins tells you more about the look than how strongly you'll feel each one.

That's worth remembering if you fancy a realistic shape but prefer subtle veins to thick ribs. You can like the cock without wanting every vein to make itself known.

Firmness changes how the texture feels

Two toys can look almost the same and feel different when you squeeze them. One gives under your fingers. The other stays firm. The ribs or bumps are still there, but softer ones give more when you press them.

Ribs and bumps on a firm dildo can feel more noticeable than those on a softer one. Their size and spacing, and how much pressure you use, matter too. There isn't one sensation that every textured dildo delivers, however confidently somebody describes theirs in a review.

If you like a softer outside with firmer support underneath, our dual-density dildo guide explains that option. Then decide how much texture you want on top. Softness and ribs are two separate choices.

Keep the size familiar if texture is the new bit

You started looking for a ribbed dildo in your usual size. Half an hour later, you're considering a dildo twice the size because the colour is nice. Steady on. That is quite a shopping detour.

If texture is what you're curious about, staying near a size and firmness you already enjoy gives you fewer new things to work out. Compare the full width of the toy, including any ribs or bumps.

Our dildo size guide helps with those measurements. Then browse the dildo range for the combination you actually want. A familiar size with a different surface can be plenty of change.

Use lube and wash your dildo after play

Once you've chosen the toy, give it enough lube to move comfortably. Water-based lube is a straightforward choice with silicone toys. Dry friction tells you very little about whether you like a surface; mostly, it tells you that you need to stop making things uncomfortable.

Stop if it hurts or irritates. If the texture feels too much even with enough lube, a smoother toy may suit you better. You don't owe a purchase a second chance inside your body.

For anal use, choose a toy made for it with a wide, effective flared base. Afterwards, clean between any ribs, bumps or veins and let the toy dry. Our toy cleaner versus soap guide covers the cleaning options.

Buy the surface you're curious about, keep the other choices sensible and enjoy being picky. You're choosing a sex toy, not proving how much you can put up with.
