Soft Penis? The Sex Doesn’t Have to Stop

You're kissing, clothes have come off, everything feels good. Then an erection changes and suddenly the room has the atmosphere of a cancelled flight. Nobody knows what to say. Someone starts apologising.

You don't have to turn that moment into the end of sex. A soft penis can still feel pleasure, and being turned on doesn't always produce a firm erection. There are plenty of ways to enjoy each other if you both want to keep going.

The first useful move is letting the person attached to the penis have a say. They may want a different kind of touch, a pause or a cuddle. None of those requires a dramatic bloody announcement.

Ask what they want, not what went wrong

“Want to keep kissing?” gives somebody an easy choice. Repeatedly asking whether they're still attracted to you gives them an emotional problem to solve while they're already feeling self-conscious.

An erection isn't a reliable report on desire. Stress, alcohol, medicines and physical health can all affect erections, and you won't identify the cause by staring harder. If you're the one whose erection has changed, you can say what you'd enjoy without apologising for your body.

You might both still be horny. You might want a different evening. Find out rather than filling the silence with your worst guesses.

Keep the pleasure; change the plan

Kissing, touch, oral sex and external toys can all be part of an enjoyable encounter without penile penetration. Choose what sounds good to both of you. This doesn't have to be the consolation round.

A soft penis may still enjoy gentle touch, and the rest of the body hasn't disappeared. Ask about sensation and comfort rather than assuming the same pressure or movement will feel the same now.

Our non-penetrative sex guide offers other ways to get comfortable together. The important change is giving those activities your attention, rather than doing them while secretly checking whether an erection has returned.

A toy can join in without “fixing” anyone

If you both fancy a vibrator, bring it in because you want the vibration. A toy doesn't need to arrive carrying the weight of rescuing the whole evening.

You can use it together, take turns or let your partner show you what they like. Our guide to mutual masturbation is a useful next read if sharing that attention sounds good.

There's no need to panic-buy a pump or ring on the spot. Buying equipment while convinced you need to repair yourself is a fairly shit shopping experience. Pleasure and treatment are different jobs; choose the right help for the one you actually need.

Don't keep checking whether they're hard again

Imagine trying to relax while somebody keeps looking down to see whether you're improving. Even well-meant encouragement can start feeling like an inspection.

If you've agreed to enjoy something else, let that be the activity. Keep kissing because you like kissing. Enjoy the toy because it feels good. An erection returning can be welcome without being the only acceptable outcome.

The same applies to orgasm. It may happen without a firm erection, but it doesn't have to become the new target. Our guide to taking the pressure off orgasm covers that particular trap.

If erection difficulties keep happening, see your GP

Occasional changes happen. If difficulty getting or keeping an erection continues, is a new concern or is bothering you, book a GP appointment. There can be physical or psychological causes, and suitable treatment depends on what's going on.

You don't have to wait until your sex life feels miserable to ask. Equally, you don't have to diagnose yourself from the most alarming search result at two in the morning.

Getting help and continuing to enjoy intimacy can happen alongside each other. The appointment is for your health. It isn't a notice that you're temporarily disqualified from being sexy.

You can also stop and still fancy each other

Sometimes a change of plan feels lovely. Sometimes someone is frustrated and would rather put their pants on. Let that answer stand without making them perform cheerfulness as well.

A good response can be as simple as staying affectionate and getting on with the evening. Nobody needs to promise a spectacular comeback tomorrow.

Your sex life has room for more than one kind of good night. An erection gets a say in what your penis can do. It doesn't get to decide whether the two of you are allowed to enjoy each other.
