Partner-on-Top Sex Positions: Comfort and Support

Somewhere between "this could be fun" and "why are my thighs negotiating a ceasefire?", being on top can become unexpectedly athletic.

The fix is rarely to grit your teeth and perform harder. It's to find out whether the arrangement actually supports your body.

Being on top may give someone more influence over movement and positioning. It doesn't make them responsible for putting on a show.

Sort out the support before the rhythm

A soft mattress can swallow the points where you're trying to support yourself. A very firm surface creates its own pressure spots. Neither tells you that you're unfit. They tell you something about the surface.

Notice where your weight rests and whether your knees, hips or wrists feel comfortable. Avoid loading a joint that's already complaining. A folded towel or suitable cushion may help with pressure for some people, but it won't turn an uncomfortable joint angle into a good one.

Try the position without any expectation of continuing. Getting settled is useful information, not an awkward delay.

You are allowed to stay close

The version shown in entertainment often involves an upright torso and quite a lot of visible movement. That is one version, not the admission requirement.

A closer, supported arrangement may suit you better. Whatever you try, both people need to remain comfortable, able to move and free to stop. Don't rely on your partner taking weight they haven't agreed to support.

If penetration is involved, the receiving partner's comfort determines the workable angle and depth. A position's name doesn't override a person's experience of it.

Change before you're exhausted

Tell your partner when you'd like to swap positions or pause. You can do that while things are going well. Waiting until your legs wobble makes the transition less graceful than it needs to be.

A sentence such as "I like this, but my knees need a different job" is perfectly clear. No apology required.

You can also change the kind of activity. There is no rule that an evening must stay on one track from beginning to end. The sex toys for couples guide has ideas for choosing additions together rather than buying a surprise assignment.

Keep accessories within reach

If you want lubricant or a toy nearby, place it where someone can reach it without a balancing act. Look through the lubricant collection before the evening, not while trying to hold a position and read an ingredient list on your phone.

Stop for pain, numbness or a feeling of instability. If a position repeatedly causes pain, leave it out and seek health advice where needed.

Being on top should give you a say in what happens. That includes saying you'd quite like to lie down now. A good partner will cope with this devastating plot development.
