Suspenders or Stay-Ups? Choose Your Stocking Look

Love stockings, less keen on spending the evening clipping yourself together? Stay-ups would like a word. Then again, if those little suspender straps are the bit you fancy, taking them away rather misses the point.

The choice is simple once you separate the look from the fastening. Suspender stockings need straps to hold them up. Stay-ups have gripping bands around the thighs, so they can do the job on their own. Both can be sheer, lacy and very worth getting dressed for.

Suspenders: when you want the straps on show

A suspender belt sits around your waist or hips, with adjustable straps running down to clips at the stocking tops. You'll also see straps attached to some basques and other lingerie. A garter belt is another name for the separate belt, if that's the name you've come across.

Those lines across bare skin are a big part of the look. A narrow belt leaves more of your middle visible, while a deeper one gives you a broader band of lace or fabric. With a bra and knickers, either turns three separate pieces into a deliberately dressed-up set.

You can go beautifully coordinated with matching lace, or keep the belt plain and let patterned stockings have their moment. Seams give a vintage feel; fishnets make the same outfit look a little less well-behaved. Black stockings with black knickers are an easy starting point, but nobody's confiscating your lingerie if the lace isn't identical.

A basque with attached suspenders gives you a longer fitted outfit without a separate belt. Our corset, bustier and basque comparison helps you choose the top half.

Stay-ups: lace at your thighs, no belt required

Stay-ups, also called hold-ups, use a fitted band, often with silicone grip inside, to stay in place. There are no straps to connect to another garment. You get the stocking tops and the bare thighs above them with fewer things to put on.

They're a handy choice with a slip or chemise when you don't want another waistband underneath. A wide lace top can become the main detail as the hem moves; a plain band keeps the look simpler. Under close-fitting clothes, skipping the belt also means fewer fastenings to show through.

If you love a matching bra-and-knicker set as it is, stay-ups add another layer without changing it. For a quick outfit change, they're particularly appealing. Sometimes the elaborate dressing-up is part of the fun. Sometimes you've spent quite enough of your evening finding the other bloody earring.

One small shopping distinction: “thigh-high” describes the length. It doesn't, by itself, mean a pair will stay up without straps. Stay-ups provide their own grip; ordinary suspender stockings don't.

Get a fit that stays comfortable

With suspenders, fit the belt securely before adjusting the straps. The belt should stay where you've put it instead of slipping down as the stockings pull. Adjust each strap to take up the slack without dragging the stocking top upwards.

Stay-ups need an even fit around the thigh. A band that digs in is too tight; one that slides down isn't doing its job. Smooth the top flat rather than folding it over, and put gripping bands against clean, dry skin. Save the body lotion for afterwards.

Stocking length matters for both styles. Too short, and you're trying to stretch the whole leg higher; too long, and excess fabric has to gather somewhere. Follow the height and leg measurements for the hosiery rather than assuming your usual knicker size tells the whole story.

Have a little walk and sit down once you're dressed. You want to know now if a strap needs loosening, not discover it while trying to look casually irresistible.

How to fasten suspender clips

The common button-and-loop clip is less fiddly once you can see what goes where. Use the reinforced band at the top of the stocking, rather than the delicate leg fabric.

  1. Open the clip and place the small button behind the stocking band.
  2. Bring the loop over the fabric-covered button.
  3. Slide the button into the loop's narrower end to secure it, then adjust the strap so it supports without pulling.

Fasten the front clips first so you can see what you're doing, then work around to the others. Keep the straps flat. A twisted one is much easier to sort now than once everything else is on.

And a useful dressing trick: knickers over the straps make bathroom breaks easier. It may not be the bit that sold you on suspenders, but halfway through a night out you'll appreciate the thought.

Which pair would you rather put on?

Choose suspenders if the straps and the connected lingerie set are what you love. Choose stay-ups if you want stocking tops without a belt, especially with a slip or an outfit you've already put together.

Take a look through our lingerie collection and build around the detail you fancy most. All those tiny clips are worth it when you love wearing them. If you don't, skipping them is an excellent choice too.
