Sex Toy Travel Locks: Why Your New Vibrator Might Not Turn On

You have charged your new vibrator, pressed the button and received absolutely nothing in return. Before assuming the relationship is already over, check whether it has a travel lock.

A travel lock prevents accidental activation while the toy is stored or transported. It can also make a perfectly functional product seem broken when the unlocking instructions are hiding on page seven beneath a diagram the size of a postage stamp.

A lock is different from a flat battery

Some toys ignore normal button presses when locked. Others flash or pulse to indicate their status. The behaviour varies, so the absence of normal vibration does not immediately prove a charging fault.

Find the exact model and version in the manual. A manufacturer's product family may contain several generations with different controls. The familiar colour is not sufficient identification; plenty of electronics have cousins.

Check that the model actually has a travel lock. Not every toy does, and random button combinations cannot install one by enthusiasm.

Follow the stated sequence

The We-Vibe Nova 2 manual, for example, describes using its plus and minus buttons together for the travel-lock function. That is an example for that model, not a universal code for the entire vibrator industry.

Read the specified timing and confirmation signal. If charging disables the lock on your model, remember that you may need to enable it again afterwards.

Avoid repeatedly pressing everything while changing the charger at the same time. Testing one thing at a time makes it much easier to know what worked. It also reduces the chance of accidentally discovering the loudest programme at an inconvenient moment.

Practise before packing

Once you know how the lock works, activate it and confirm that an ordinary press does not start the toy. Keep the instructions somewhere easy to find again.

A travel lock does not provide privacy against someone who deliberately handles the product. It is an accidental-activation feature, not a digital security system. Store the toy somewhere appropriate and out of reach of children and pets.

If it still will not start

Do not pry open a sealed body or keep charging a damaged product. Contact the retailer or manufacturer with the model and the steps you tried if the normal checks fail.

A successful unlock can feel embarrassingly anticlimactic after half an hour of concern. Accept the win. The toy was doing its job; it simply took the phrase "not in public" rather seriously.
