What Is Edging? When Waiting Is Part of the Fun
Share
Usually, getting close to orgasm is a reason to keep doing exactly what you're doing. Edging deliberately changes that plan. You slow down or stop before orgasm, let the intensity ease, then decide whether you want to build it again.
For some people, the waiting is the enjoyable bit. For others, it's a frustrating interruption to a perfectly good wank. Neither response needs fixing.
Why would you delay an orgasm?
Edging can draw your attention to the build-up rather than the finish. Some people enjoy noticing changes in sensation, taking their time or playing with the expectation of what comes next.
With a partner, it can also involve agreed control. One person guides the pace while the other enjoys being teased. The hot part is that you both want that exchange, not that one person has decided to be a surprise pain in the arse.
It doesn't guarantee a stronger orgasm. Enjoying the anticipation is enough reason to try it, and finding it annoying is enough reason to leave it out.
Ask before changing the plan
If a partner is involved, talk about whether delaying orgasm sounds fun before interrupting them. Agree how you'll signal that you're getting close, want a pause or have had enough of the teasing.
You can enjoy a bossy partner and still say “I'd like to finish now”. If either person wants to stop the game, stop. A consensual bit of control isn't a lifetime appointment to run somebody else's sex life.
Pay attention instead of counting rounds
There isn't a required number of pauses or a target duration. Start with the idea rather than a schedule, and notice whether you actually like the change in pace.
Stop if you become sore, numb or uncomfortable. Don't use numbing products to push through irritation, and don't turn a pleasurable experiment into a test of how much you can tolerate.
If orgasm happens sooner than planned, nothing has failed. Bodies aren't especially interested in obeying a stopwatch.
Choose controls that are easy to use
If you're using a vibrator, you want a quick way to reduce the intensity or switch it off. A separate on/off control may be more convenient than cycling through every pattern to find the setting you wanted.
Our vibrator range includes different shapes and controls, but you don't need a new toy to try edging. Hands can do the job perfectly well.
Keep it enjoyable, even if you change your mind
You can decide to finish, carry on with something else or stop without an orgasm. Our orgasm pressure guide is useful if the plan starts feeling like a performance review.
If you're seeking help for ejaculation timing that bothers you, speak with a clinician about suitable options. Recreational edging isn't a personalised treatment plan.
Otherwise, be curious and see what you like. Sometimes waiting makes sex more interesting. Sometimes you'd quite like everyone to stop being clever and let you enjoy yourself. Fair enough.
