Glass and stainless steel toys can look like the grown-up end of the drawer: smooth, solid and rather more architectural than something with flashing lights. Their similarities can hide meaningful differences in weight, shape and handling.

Neither material is automatically the better choice. Start with what you can comfortably hold, the intended use and whether the manufacturer clearly identifies the material and care requirements.

Firmness is the common ground

Both glass and steel toys are generally rigid. They do not flex around the body in the way some softer toys do, so dimensions and shape deserve close attention.

Think about lifting, grip and retrieving the toy comfortably. A smooth surface can be harder to hold with lubricant on your hands. Handles and bases should suit the way the product is intended to be used.

Check glass for chips, cracks or rough areas, particularly after a drop. Inspect steel for damage, corrosion or compromised coatings. Stop using a damaged item rather than trying to polish, glue or sand it into service.

Follow the exact manufacturer's cleaning instructions. Do not assume every glass toy can be boiled or that every steel-looking product is a solid, uncoated piece of stainless steel.

If temperature play interests you, use only manufacturer-approved methods and mild temperatures. Avoid sudden temperature changes, freezers, microwaves and improvised heating. Test cautiously on less sensitive skin first, and stop if the temperature is uncomfortable.
